No Funny Marathon Stories

As the Houston Marathon crowd hit town this weekend, I looked through my files for a funny marathon story to tell folks over the weekend.

I couldn’t find one.

“My doctor recently told me that jogging could add years to my life. I think he was right. I feel ten years older already.” MILTON BERLE

I’ve run several of these races in my life. As I thought through my own experience, I realized I don’t have a funny marathon story from my own experience. I have some prayers. Some spiritual encounters. Near death experiences. But nothing funny.

Truth is, the easiest mile of the marathon is the first one, and it just gets harder after that.

Lots of people view life the same way. That the glory days are all in mile 1. That the longer you live, the worse things get. Isn’t it good news to read what God has to say about life’s constant improvement?

God says that when we live for Him, each day is better than the one before. He says that even though our bodies are wasting away on the outside, we are able to find new and growing strength on the inside.

Feeling tired? Find yourself looking backward instead of forward? The more you lean on Him, the more you will tap into a growing strength, and you’ll be able to fix your eyes forward, no matter what the world throws at you.

I’m training for my first marathon right now…and it’s killing me. I’m 27 years old, and suddenly feel like I have the knees of a 50 year old. I took up running to stay in shape and pass the time while I was “in between churches” and have learned a lot about God in the process. You’re right-running is a lot of things, but it’s not funny.
